Graphic Design

In collaboration with the Chinese American Student Association (CASA) and the Asian Student Association (ASA), I was tasked with designing the merchandise for their yearly Lunar New Year event. An event that hosts over 300+ people.

The main priority was the T-Shirt design I was tasked to create. Outsite the color of the shirt itself, I was limited to 3 colors and larger shapes as it would be a vinyl sticker print. Smaller designs would peel easier than more thicker shapes. Finally, the theme had to follow themes revolving around the Year of the Rabbit, as it took place in 2023.

the PROCESS

sketching

Various sketches were made emulating different types of styles, including a packaging label, a comic book, and a video game character screen.

Sticking to the 3 color limit, I used the sketch phase to balance out color heiarchy onto a black background, as the t-shirt base would be black. I found that yellow and white would be best to use to make main shapes and highlights, while red would fit best for more details.

crowd work

In consideration of the printing limitation, there were different iterations of detail that went into the crowd graphic that would go in the middle of the shirt.

The first drawing would start very sketchy, however through each pass I would simplify further and further. After simplifying it was clear that it became too overcrowded and the dragons were difficult to see, and it made the drawing itself feel too bland.

The solution was a middle ground of detail and visibility where each element had room to breathe.

assets

These were the assets that were also exported from the final product for various use such as promotional material, stickers, and photobooth decals.
